Foodborne illness is a significant burden on Americans. Approximately 48 million people, 1 in 6 Americans, get sick each year and of that number 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die. Immune-compromised individuals such as infants and children, pregnant women, older individuals and chemotherapy patients, are more susceptible. Foodborne illness can cause life-long chronic disease.

Fifteen percent of U.S. food supply is imported, and the supply is more high-tech and complex. As the country’s demographics shift, there is a growing population especially at risk for foodborne illnesses. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act addresses the entire spectrum of food safety issues and the roles of all the stakeholders. In addition, it makes each stakeholder in the food supply system responsible for preventing issues and holds them accountable.
