2016 McGuire & Associates Scholarship
Joel Cabrera

Hello, there. My name is Joel Cabrera, an 18 year old adult male. Ever since I was a young boy in elementary school, I had always dreamed of receiving the highest form of education that is possibly available to me: post-secondary education. However, I was afraid I would never receive such an advanced kind of schooling, as I had lived a urban lifestyle - a lifestyle characterized by low family income and social marginalization. However, after working laboriously and strenuously throughout high school, I was not only admitted to one of the best schools in the nation (Rutgers University - New Brunswick), but given a generous scholarship by the IFSA Foundation, too - all due to my exceptional academic efforts. With my receipt of these tremendous opportunities in life, I can not only achieve my dream of affording and obtaining a collegiate education, but also utilize that education to repay my loving parents - people who had cared and supported me throughout my life (both of whom are now divorced). As a first-generation college student, having the chance to attend college is the best gift a human being could ever have.
