 2016 Sue Ling Gin Charitable Trust Scholarship
Sachindra Sanam Venkata

Hello! My name is Sachindra Sanam Venkata, and I will be a freshman at Vanderbilt University in the fall. Although I am from Houston, TX, I am excited about moving to Nashville, TN for the next four years. I will be majoring in Medicine, Health, and Society and Neuroscience, two majors that combine my interest for medicine, biomedical science, and public health. Beyond the sciences, my other interests include sports like swimming and baseball, working with computers, and world history. With the Sue Ling Gin Charitable Trust Scholarship, I will be able to realize dream of becoming a top-notch oncologist all while learning how today's world shapes our society's health and how human beings can bridge the gaps that arise along the way.

2016 Intervine Scholarship
Allison Linzing

My name is Allie Linzing, and I am a rising junior at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. I am majoring in special education in hopes to one day be able to impact every student that walks into my classroom in a positive way. This past semester, I earned a spot on the Dean’s List while being involved in many clubs, including  Epsilon Delta, a teaching organization, Best Buddies, and Alpha Epsilon Phi, a social sorority, as well as spending my free time volunteering at a local preschool for students with disabilities. The Intervine Scholarship will go towards finding my education which will allow me the opportunity to explore the amazing opportunities that the University of Illinois has to offer.

2016 Gourmet Foods Scholarship
Caroline Davis

A native Kentuckian, Caroline majored in Community & Leadership Development at the University of Kentucky. This time deepened her passion for public service and strengthened her resolve to work in this field. She served as the Director of the National Residence Hall Honorary for two years, a role that provided opportunities to develop service projects impacting both her campus and local communities. She also completed a professional practicum with the Lexington Rescue Mission, which provided the opportunity to gain professional experience directly impacting her community. Additionally, she spent four years working in various roles for Residence Life at the University of Kentucky, including Resident Advisor, Assistant Resident Director, and Resident Director. The responsibility of creating community amongst a new group of residents each year had a significant impact on Caroline’s desire to work with and serve small communities. Now, Caroline is beginning her graduate studies at the University of Georgia in their highly ranked Public Administration program. She has chosen to concentrate in both Nonprofit Administration & Local Government Administration, so that upon graduation she will be qualified to efficiently and effectively serve small communities.

Charlene Hamilton

Hello, my name is Charlene Hamilton. I am currently in my junior year as a Business major at Western Governors University (WGU). After I graduate and earn my Bachelor of Science Business Management, I plan to continue my education in pursuit of a Master of Business in Global Logistics Operations, and Supply Chain Management. Although I have been working in the corporate environment for over six years, it has only been during the past few years, working at Harvey Alpert & Co., that I discovered my calling in the logistics field. It is beautifully complex and wonderfully complicated, which has forced me to become an increasingly self-reliant, detailed oriented, problem solver. With much gratitude and appreciation to The King Nut Company, thank you for your generous award. I am overwhelmingly honored to be chosen for this scholarship!

Christopher Bedard

I am Christopher Bedard, the appreciative 2016 recipient of the United Airlines Scholarship Award. I am from Elmont, New York and I live with my older brother, mother, father, and grandmother. I attended middle school at Our Lady of the Snows School in Floral Park, New York. I attended Chaminade High School in Mineola, New York. Now, I will move on to college and will enroll as an involved freshman at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. I will continue to partake in community service, intramural sports, and music study and performance as I have been for many years now. I am of the Roman Catholic faith and am an African American male with a Haitian background.

Connie Tran

My name is Connie. I was born and raised in San Francisco, California. I am the first person in my family to attend college and studied marine biology before traveling across the country to begin my nursing career in New York City. My education at Columbia University, School of Nursing, has allowed me numerous opportunities to explore the factors that affect an individual’s health and quality of life. I hope that as a family nurse practitioner, I will be able to make an impact through preventative care.

2016 Flying Food Group Scholarship
Dylan Feliu

My name is Dylan Feliu and I attended and graduated from Valley Stream North High School in 2016. At Valley Stream North I was the captain of the varsity football team and voted all conference. While actively participating in sports I was also in a club, known as Leadership Academy, where I mentored the youth of my school on leadership. In addition to these extracurricular activities I spent countless hours in the labs of Stony Brook University studying Cancer Stem Cells in the retina. This fall I will be a freshman at Stony Brook University.

Emma Kautz

My name is Emma Kautz and I am a rising senior at Loyola University Chicago studying Finance and International Business. Loyola has allowed me to experience the business world in the city of Chicago as well as cities across the globe. With the help of this scholarship, I can continue to broaden my horizons and expand my knowledge with less financial burden. In the fall I will begin working in the Community Leaders Program at Google to help bridge the digital divide within Chicago’s surrounding communities. This scholarship allows me to further my educational opportunities and make positive changes in underprivileged communities.

Garrett Kiefer

My name is Garrett Kiefer. I was born and raised in Texas. For the majority of my childhood I attended schools in the Frisco Independent School District. I went to Wakeland High School in Frisco, TX and was ranked among the Top 50 percent of my graduating class. I then went on to further my education at Blinn College in Bryan, TX where I maintained a 3.9 GPA. I am currently living in College Station, TX in a house with three of my best friends from high school. I will be transferring to Mays Business School at Texas A&M University for the Fall Semester of 2016.

Kelly Bucher

Hi, my name is Kelly Bucher.  I attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison and I’ll be a Junior this fall.  I was selected as the 2016 recipient for the Harvey & Laura Alpert Scholarship. I’d like to thank Harvey Alpert for his generous donation towards my education.  I’m in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications majoring in marketing/advertising.  I plan to work for a non-for-profit ad agency to encourage those who suffer with eating disorders to get help. This scholarship is going to help me pay of the college debt and for that I am extremely thankful. Thank you.

Meryl Goeke

Meryl Goeke recently graduated from St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Potomac, Maryland. She will attend Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. In the next four years she plans to study Global Development and Spanish. Her goal is to learn more about how she can better the world. She was born in London, England and then moved to Holland and Spain before living in the United States. This has created her love of travel and her ease in foreign cultures. She has traveled extensively with her family and plans to continue this in her undergraduate years.

Michael Kennedy

Michael Kennedy is a 19 year old student from Chicago, Illinois. He is attending Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio as a Posse Scholar and intends to major in Comparative American Studies. Over the years, he has been proud to be involved in many volunteer experiences, ranging from community cleaning to volunteering at the 2015 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. During the summer, he has gained experience in the hospitality field interacting with people from around the world while working at the Willis Tower Skydeck. It is his hope that he can combine his passion in the social sciences and love for working with people as an educator.

Michell Chaparro Medina

My name is Michell Chaparro, I am currently 18 years old and I am an early grad from Skyline High School in Longmont, Colorado. I live with both of my parents and 4 other siblings. I am bilingual and during my high school years I volunteered as a translator in my own school and in schools around me as well. I have volunteered at the Boulder Bolder and I have babysat for quite a while. With all of this, I learned to communicate with the people around me and I'm eager to try new things. Ever since I was little my dream has been to become a nurse and he able to help people all around me. I plan on going to Front Range to pursue my dream and I wouldn't have been able to do that without the help of the IFSA community. Thank you for believing in me.

Nicholas Melvin

Hello, my name is Nicholas Melvin and I'm in my fourth of five years at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. I'm a mechanical engineering major with aspirations to work in the aerospace industry. I currently work on the Blackhawk program at Sikorsky Aircraft as a propulsion design engineer and I'd like to continue my journey into the aerospace and defense industry. I enjoy playing hockey, fishing, golfing, reading and skiing. I'd like to thank Bill Kensi for selecting me for this prestigious award.

After completing her MBA at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, Nicole joined JetBlue in 2007. She started her airline career in Revenue Management field and later joined the Product Development Onboard Experience team. It is her mission to bring humanity back to air travel by offering JetBlue customers the best onboard experience.

Parker Ragle

Parker Ragle was born and raised in the Plano, Texas area. He grew up playing basketball both for recreational teams and for his school, and he later became a youth basketball coach in order to give back to the basketball community. He has been working at Cinemark Theaters since he turned 16, and he was also involved significantly with his high school. On top of participating in various community service organizations, he was elected Senior Class President of the Plano West Class of 2015 which boasted over 1500 students, and he pushed himself to improve the school in every way he could. He will be attending Vanderbilt University at Nashville, Tennessee in the Fall.

Rodney Babcock

My name is Rodney Babcock I am a non-traditional student who decided to return to school in my forties.  Over the years I had witnessed several friends suffer from the grips of addiction problems or alcoholism. This inspired me to pursue a career in Human Services; my concentration is in Mental Health Counseling. Although my passion is to work with people afflicted with addiction issues, I recently found an interest in Domestic Violence Counseling. I volunteer time with an organization; New Beginnings which I helped file the proper paperwork making them a 501c3 non-profit organization.   My overall goal is to have my own counseling service or be partners of a counseling center serving people with a variety with mental health disorders.

Trevor Barton

My name is Trevor Barton, and I am a Supply Chain Management Major at TCU located in Fort Worth, Texas. This is the second year I have applied for a scholarship from the IFSA Foundation, and both years I was lucky enough to receive one. This year, 2015, I was awarded the John & Ginnie Long Scholarship. I have completed two internships my Junior and Senior summers at Fidelity Investments and TTI, Inc., respectively. I have also been lucky enough to take a study abroad trip and study global supply chain in China. I am continuously trying to broaden my knowledge of supply chain and business in general, and by receiving this scholarship I feel it is allowing me to do so.

My name is Zina Darwish, I'm a nineteen year old Jordanian living in Lebanon. I am about to start my second year at the American University of Beirut . I intend to major in political science with a minor in Media and Communication. I graduated from King's Academy, a coeducational boarding school in Jordan. I am passionate about politics, the empowerment of women in Jordan and beyond, learning new things, art, design, traveling, fashion, Turkish coffee, sunsets and the sea.
