IFSA Board of Directors Call for Nominations
The opportunity is now to nominate candidates for the 2013-14 IFSA Board that you believe will best serve the interests of the global onboard industry and the Association. The nomination deadline is Friday, June 14, 2013. Each Active Member company (airlines and caterers) may nominate one candidate for each open Active position and each Supplier Member company may nominate one candidate for the Supplier position.
After receipt of submissions, the Nominating Committees prepare a slate as outlined in the IFSA bylaws. To access the bylaws or a list of the current Board members, please visit www.ifsanet.com.
Three Positions Open
The bylaws provide for up to eight (8) Active directors-at-large. In 2013-14 there are two (2) Active and one (1) Supplier positions open.

Food Safety Update
USDA regulations may cause additional liability for airlines and caterers
Following is information provided by the IFSA Government Affairs and Education Committee, regarding revisions to the USDA’s “Manual for Agricultural Clearance.” The revisions are not considered to be business as usual and may create additional liability for both caterers and airlines. IFSA is surveying airline and caterer members to get their feedback on the rule. Please respond to the survey by May 31, 2013.
Your participation in the survey will allow IFSA to provide information from industry representatives to the USDA, and potentially encourage the agency to revise the rule and lessen the liabilities for airlines and caterers that may result. Please see the additional details below.

Late in 2012, the USDA revised the “Manual for Agricultural Clearance” and added a number of requirements that must be met when renewing or applying for Compliance Agreements beginning in 2013, including: “Caterers, aircraft cleaners and cartage firms are now required to have compliance agreements in order to cater, process and/or haul.” This information may be found in Appendix B: Completing Regulated Garbage Compliance Agreements-Emergency Backup Systems on page B-1-10 of the Manual. Please note: the changes are not considered to be business as usual and may create additional liability for both caterers and airlines.
Currently each caterer signs a Compliance Agreement (CA) in each airport location where international arrivals take place. Each CA outlines the requirements for handling Regulated Garbage which includes a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) that includes meeting and de-catering the aircraft, logging the origin and weight of the garbage, spill & routine disinfection procedures and approved back- ups for the proper treatment and disposal of the international garbage.
Effective in 2013 all Compliance Agreements require the caterer to list a back-up caterer for meeting and stripping the aircraft if for some reason they cannot meet the inbound aircraft in the required amount of time. The following are serious issues that have been identified by both airlines and caterers regarding this new back-up requirement:
Each airline has a contract for each airport they service to cover the catering function. This regulation could possibly have non-contract caterers in that location to service aircraft.
Back-up caterers may not be trained specific catering procedures for airline customers, including knowledge of the aircraft and de-catering of airline specific galley logistics.
The back-up caterer may not have the proper equipment (vehicles) to service the aircraft (i.e., not all caterers could approach all wide body aircraft as they may have specific truck requirements)
The back-up caterer could be held to the time constraints of the compliance agreement (which is different in every location). Ultimately this could affect the caterer and/or the airline’s on time performance.
It is unclear which party would accept the liability for an aircraft hit or an employee injury.
If employees from the same company arrive from different airports (if that was the designated back-up) they would not have the SIDA credentials that would allow them to service aircraft. Moreover, employees from other locations would not have the customs seals required in most locations to service aircraft at a different airport.
Some airport locations currently only have one catering company that has a signed Compliance Agreement to handle and process regulated garbage.
Hand Washing Protocol
IFSA Food Safety Consultant Dean Davidson received a question about the use of hand sanitizers versus liquid hand soap. In this month’s edition of Onboard IFSA, Mr. Davidson provides additional information about the industry’s protocol for hand washing. This information is gathered from the Food Code, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and other sources:
Most public officials recommend liquid hand soap instead of liquid hand soap with sanitizer. The best bactericidal effect provided by hand washing is with plain soap and warm running water for at least 20 seconds and drying your hands with a paper towel to reduce bacteria and viruses on the skin. The paper towel removes dead skin cells which bacteria and viruses tend to attach to. Additionally, using paper towels provide for safer food handling and reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses through hands, people and surface contact.
Use of hand sanitizer alone has not been recommended. Sanitizers require additional contact time with skin and surfaces that is not often present when normal hand washing occurs in a public or food service facility. Use of a hand sanitizer alone without hand washing should only be used in places where safe water and hand wash facilities are not readily available. Hand washing facilities should always be provided to food handlers with water supplies.
The best protection is to wash hands and use a hand sanitizer after thorough hand washing. Click here to read more about hand washing.
2013 IFSA Foundation Scholarship Applications Now Available
The 2013 IFSA Foundation Scholarship Awards are exclusively available for IFSA members and their families! The Foundation offers multiple scholarships to help students and current onboard services professionals further their education. The Foundation scholarships are awards given to exceptional students. They cover tuition, books, living expenses and other costs associated with college. The scholarships are available to students and industry professionals across the world. US Airways’ new amenity kit gets big promotion in Times Square
On Monday, May 6, New York City residents and visitors got a sneak peek at the new amenity kit, which will appear onboard US Airways Envoy Business Class International routes starting in July 2013. WESSCO International designed the new kit’s look and sourced the comfort products that will be included. Some items passengers may find include earplugs, an eyeshade, mouthwash, a pen, socks, tissues, and a toothbrush and toothpaste.
