LETTER FROM IFSA PRESIDENT
Dear IFSA members,
The business world has experienced fast-paced change over the past few decades, especially within the airline and onboard catering sectors. Although the industry landscape has transformed, one factor remains the same – the significance of the airline passenger experience.
As we near our 2013 Conference in Anaheim this September, it is important to note how much this event helps our members to deliver the best airline passenger experience possible. The various industries, ranging from in-flight entertainment to catering, are becoming progressively interrelated. For this reason, we have continued to focus on our alliance with the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), whose membership is committed to improving the passenger experience on a daily basis.
For the past three years, APEX and IFSA have collaborated to present a co-located event. The 2012 IFSA Annual Conference & Exhibition, which was co-located with APEX in Long Beach, California, was a great success with 860 attendees. These numbers are a 15% increase in attendees over 2011 and a 12% increase in airline attendees. Additionally, the 2012 Exhibition involved more than 160 exhibitors, an 11% increase over the 2011 tradeshow.
This year, will involve an integrated conference, as well as an open tradeshow floor, paving the way for an exciting and dynamic show. To represent the collaborative efforts of both organizations, the show has been renamed the APEX/IFSA EXPO. The event is planned for 9-12 September at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California USA. I strongly encourage you to make plans to attend as there are many great opportunities for education, connecting with key decision makers and growing your business. APEX/IFSA EXPO UPDATES
Join aviation professionals from the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) and the International Flight Services Association (IFSA) for the APEX/IFSA EXPO! The EXPO is the only event exclusive to experts and decision-makers from around the world committed to elevating the airline passenger experience.

General Session Speaker Announced
The APEX/IFSA EXPO will feature top-notch educational sessions on Monday 9 September. The joint general session will kick off with Mr. Dean Hallett, Executive Vice President, Operations and Strategy and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) with Fox Filmed Entertainment.

Dean Hallett is a key member of the executive team and is instrumental in shaping the overall strategy of the studio. In his current role, Hallett provides strategic direction and operational guidance to all FFE divisions including theatrical production, worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution, worldwide home entertainment, television distribution, digital exhibition and digital media. He aligns and optimizes resources while providing guidance to each of the studio divisions as they integrate digital product offerings into day-to-day operations. Hallett also oversees strategic planning and business development, technology research and engineering, studio and post-production operations, information technology and finance.
Hallett has overseen several key studio initiatives including new digital sell-through home entertainment strategies, the company-wide content management strategy, the digital cinema strategy and rollout, and the business process/cost revolution effort that resulted in establishing the new Enterprise Operations unit.
Prior to joining Fox, Hallett was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for The Walt Disney Studios (TWDS), a position he had held since January 2000. Prior to his CFO role, he was Senior Vice President, Planning and Control for TWDS, where he drove international theatrical and home entertainment integration initiatives, served as executive sponsor for shared services of The Walt Disney Company and helped spearhead strategic sourcing and ERP initiatives for the corporation.

5th Annual IFSA Chef’s Competition
During the EXPO, IFSA will host the 5th Annual IFSA Chef’s Competition. This Competition offers a dynamic arena for chefs around the globe involved in airline and rail onboard services to showcase their culinary talent. The Chef’s Competition will be held on Tuesday 10 September in conjunction with the upcoming APEX/IFSA EXPO. This exciting duel has a long-standing reputation for producing exciting, inspiring, mouth-watering cuisine that is sure to impress the competition judges and live audience. Each chef will be provided with a mystery basket of ingredients from which they will be asked to perform their culinary magic to produce an onboard-ready creation.

IFSA GAEC Committee provides information to USDA representatives
The previous edition of Onboard IFSA provided information from the IFSA Government Affairs and Education Committee regarding revisions to the USDA’s “Manual for Agricultural Clearance.” It was noted the revisions were not considered to be business as usual and may create additional liability for both caterers and airlines. IFSA surveyed airline and caterer members to get their feedback on the revised rules. The survey results were compiled and sent to USDA representatives, with a meeting request involving onboard services industry representatives and the USDA. Updates will be provided on this matter as they become available.

2013 IFSA Foundation Scholarship Update
2012 proved to be a ground-breaking year for the IFSA Foundation. Last year, the Foundation received 179 applications compared to 41 in the previous year, and the largest amount of donations in one year. This year, Foundation Board is pleased to announce nearly 200 scholarship applications were submitted. The Foundation Board will meet in July 2013 to select the recipients. And the recipients will be announced during the APEX/IFSA EXPO.
Each year, the IFSA Foundation offers multiple scholarships to help students and current onboard services professionals further their education. The Foundation scholarships are awards given to exceptional students. They cover tuition, books, living expenses and other costs associated with college. The scholarships are available to students and industry professionals across the world. This year, the IFSA Foundation will administer more than $40,000 in scholarship awards.
How can you support the Foundation?
· Start a scholarship to honor an individual or in your company’s name.
· Participate in the IFSA Foundation Rock and Bowl Tournament to be held on Monday 9 September in conjunction with the APEX/IFSA EXPO.
· Donate to the IFSA Foundation general scholarship fund, which is administered in the form of the IFSA Member Family scholarship award.
