GAEC Hard at Work on Regulatory Initiatives in First Half of 2014
February’s Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) meeting focused on a comprehensive review of the IFSA World Food Safety Guidelines to determine necessary updates, based on newer guidelines from the FDA, USDA and EU. This meticulous process will span much of 2014 and will result in a more streamlined guidelines document for the benefit of IFSA members. Additionally, GAEC is seeking input from European airlines which will help the WFSG provide  a broader global reach by including reference to EU food safety issues. There will be a meeting in Frankfurt, Germany to discuss this opportunity.

Additionally, GAEC has several upcoming events and projects:
Meeting on 24 March, with USDA representatives to explore and discuss solutions to the refuse issues from foreign flights into the U.S.
Meeting on 25 March, with FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) to address the labeling challenges arising from the first overhaul for nutrition labels since the FDA began requiring them more than 20 years ago.
Review of FDA Food Safety Modernization Act proposed rule on sanitary transportation of human and animal food.

Conference for Food Protection (CFP), 3-7 May, Dean Davidson will represent IFSA and GAEC in Orlando. CFP provides a representative and equitable partnership among regulators, industry, academia, professional organizations and consumers to identify problems, formulate recommendations, and develop and implement practices that ensure food safety.

Updates on these initiatives will appear in upcoming issues of IFSA OnBoard.
