IFSA Scholarship Foundation: 2014 Poised to Be Most Successful Year to Date
The International Flight Services Association Foundation is proud to offer multiple scholarships to help exceptional students and current onboard services professionals further their education. The Foundation Scholarships cover tuition, books, living expenses and associated costs with college. The scholarships are available to students across the globe. Last year, the IFSA Foundation awarded $40,000 in scholarships for the second year in a row.  In 2014, through even more generous donations, the IFSA Foundation will administer over $55,000 USD in scholarship awards.

Ideation Task Force in Action
The Ideation Task Force met 19 February, at Delta Headquarters in Atlanta, GA.  Committee discussions revolved around ways to add additional value for IFSA members and ways to expand the membership. The key objective was to make recommendations for the  April IFSA Board meeting, regarding the future ventures of the organization. Also, to determine priority actions associated with in-year and long range evolutionary plans.

GAEC February Meeting: Updates to World Food Safety Guidelines 
The mission of the IFSA Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) is to provide information, guidance and education to the IFSA membership regarding food safety and security. IFSA’s GAEC maintains the World Food Safety Guidelines, an effective food safety control concept applicable to airline catering facilities worldwide. The Committee also maintains open dialogue with appropriate regulatory and legislative bodies worldwide to represent IFSA’s interests, and work cooperatively toward the common goal of public health, safety and security.

GAEC recently met at United Airlines in Chicago to work on updating IFSA's World Food Safety Guidelines document. The updated document will be finalized and made available to members in the coming months. Additionally discussed were pending regulations and other committee business, including new FDA food safety rules and EU food labeling regulations.

IFSA's Government Affairs Consultant Dean Davidson provides the latest updates from the Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC):

FDA Proposes New Rule to Prevent Food Safety Risks During Transportation
In January, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration proposed a rule that would require certain shippers, receivers, and carriers who transport food by motor or rail vehicles to take steps to prevent the contamination of human and animal food during transportation. The proposed regulation marks the seventh and final major rule under FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.


Businesses with less than $500,000 in total annual sales are not covered.  For those that are covered, the last section of the proposed rule under WAIVERS outlines the requirements for submitting a waiver.

Update on Current European Union Food Labeling Regulations
USFDA and USDA food labeling requirements are very similar with some notable exceptions, but the basic labeling requirements of common or usual name of the food, net quantity of contents, list of ingredients in descending order of predominance in the food, and place of manufacture, packing or distribution are generally the same.

The US and the EU are in frequent dialogue concerning these requirements and modification thereof.  The basic starting point is the US law and regulations, EU directives and then CODEX.

Legislation applicable until 12 December 2014

EU legislation on food labeling covers:

·         General rules on food labeling

·         Rules for specific foods e.g. beef or chocolate

The Directive 2000/13/EC on labeling, presentation and advertising of foods is the main EU legislation on the subject.  The country by country directives and derogations are found here.

Key points of Directive 2000/13/EC

Consumers get all the essential information on composition, manufacturer, storage methods and preparation, etc.

Applies to foods delivered as such to the consumer or to restaurants, hospitals, canteens and other mass caterers.

Food labels must be indelible and easy to see, understand and read, with some particulars appearing in the same field of vision.

Substances known as allergens must always be indicated on the label.

Hamburg Aviation Conference 2014 Recap
Over 200 aviation industry participants at this year’s Hamburg Aviation Conference had the chance to explore the opportunities that advancements in mobile communications, in particular, present for companies in the aviation sector.
This year’s conference took place 12-13 February, in Hamburg. The motto of the respected congress this year was “Think Future”, and the focus was on furthering the relationship between passengers and airlines.

APEX Australasia Conference, 17-18 March 
APEX will be heading to Sydney to host a cutting-edge conference on the entire passenger experience incorporating connectivity, content, services and more. It is APEX’s first event in the region after over 10 years and it is poised to attract key companies and individuals from the Australasia region, as well as others eager to connect down under. IFSA Headed to WTCE in April
IFSA will be well represented at the World Travel Catering and Onboard Services Expo (WTCE) in Hamburg, Germany, 8-10 April. WTCE is a global event dedicated to travel catering, passenger comfort and onboard retail products.  By attending, IFSA will be keeping current with industry trends to share with our membership, in addition to promoting the organization and networking with IFSA members. Additionally, there will be a meeting of the IFSA Executive Committee.
