Recently the IFSA Government Affairs and Education Committee met with the FDA to discuss labeling regulation. It came to our attention that many companies may need clarification on the allergen labeling regulation.
The committee is still working with the FDA to find a clear guideline and implementation plan for the industry, but it was indicated that food for sale on board would be subject to Allergen labeling regulations. Meaning all food items containing any of the 8 major allergens MUST have one of the following:
Label stating that the item "contains" the allergen(s). A "may contain" statement is not sufficient.
Listing of all ingredients which includes the common name of the allergens contained in the product. Please note that listing all ingredients may trigger additional labeling requirements.
